Previous attempts to resolve the wheel loss problem have not been effective because they have offered only a partial solution. Locking nuts or devices have been used in an attempt to prevent nuts on wheels loosening. Problems with this approach have included nuts seizing or breaking because stress on the nut is masked not managed. As well as continuing loss of wheels this also leads to major maintenance problems because nuts often become difficult to remove, even with the necessary additional equipment.
The most common alternative approach involves the use of movement indicators to warn that a nut is loosening and in danger of coming off. Unfortunately, this method relies totally on the driver or maintenance personnel spotting the movement and tightening the nut before it comes off. If this is not done in time there is nothing to prevent the nut, subsequent nuts and eventually the wheel being lost.
Now, for the first time, VisiLok combines the best of both these methods. High visibility flags are triggered as soon as the nut starts to slacken, at the same time spring-driven pins drop into slots in the stud securing the nut and preventing further movement.
